Families’ fury as a week at Butlin’s could now set them back as much as £1,600
People on Facebook have vented their anger at the price of staying at Butlin’s in Skegness, which can go up to £1,664 for a ‘gold room’.
Joshua Fawcett posted screenshots of the cost of ‘silver apartments’ and ‘golden apartments’ at the family resort.
They showed prices ranging from £925 to an eye-watering £1,299, prompting people to blast the venue for “capitalising” on Brits being unable to go abroad due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Mr Fawcett said the staggering prices are at odds with Butlin’s motto.
“‘A week’s holiday for a weeks wages’. That was what Billy himself said and believed, and that included food as at the time there was no self catering,” he said.
“How many working families today earn more than £1300 a week? The average salary today is 31k per year according to the Office for National Statistics.
“That’s roughly £585 per week. A week at Butlins including food can cost as much as £1600 with food, 3x the average wage.”
But according to the LincolnshireLive, who checked out Butlin’s’ website to see if it was true, the cost is even higher than what Mr Fawcett found.
A seven-night stay between 13 August and 20 August sets you back £1122 for a silver room and £1664 for gold.
People commenting on the post shared their thoughts on the prices.
“They’re clearly capitalising on the fact people can’t go abroad,” said Lauren Keir. “Haven has done the same, as have any caravan park around the country.”
Lynn Maindonald agreed, but is more sympathetic with Butlin’s.
“Prices are crazy at the moment, but the reality is that Butlins need to at least break even and a lot of their costs are fixed costs so the reduced capacity is going to be significantly impacting them.
“With supply and demand, people are willing to pay these prices. Everywhere in the UK is the same.”
A Butlin’s spokesperson said: “We have seen an increase in demand for bookings, particularly into the summer holidays, and we expect this trend to continue as more guests look to holiday in the UK.
“With the uncertainty around travel, people want reassurance when booking their breaks. Our Butlin’s Promise means every holiday includes a lowest price guarantee and free amendments or cancellations.”
